About Canipes Chocolates
The founder of Canipe's Candy Citchen, William B. Canipe, opened in a partnership Queens Candy Kitchen in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was taught by another candy maker from Greenville, South Carolina how to make candy and in 1964 opened his first candy shop.
After eight years in partnership at Queens Candy Kitchen, he decided to go into business for himself and in 1972 opened Canipe's Candy Citchen in Matthews, North Carolina. At this time, there was a sugar and gas shortage which caused a lot of problems for a new business. He lost a lot of customers due to no gas for deliveries. In order to survive, he opened an ice cream, candy and sandwich shop and once things sort of straightened out, he was able to get rid of them and opened candy shops in three malls. During this time he moved the candy plant to Charlotte, North Carolina.
In 1986 he opened a shop in Magic Harbor in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Magic Harbor closed after five years and he opened two shops at Carowinds and worked the Southern Living Home & Garden Show and the Christmas Show as well as selling wholesale.
By then Mr. Canipe's youngest son, Todd, had graduated college and wanted to go into the business with him and they decided to go back into the retail business. The first retail store was in Gastonia, North Carolina. From the notoriety at Magic Harbor, an opportunity at Barefoot Landing came about and a retail store opened. This one was called Wee-R-Sweetz.
In 1992 his other son Butch was asked to come work in the family business. He accepted and the manufacturing facility was moved from Charlotte, North Carolina to Longs, South Carolina, just outside Myrtle Beach.
Mr. Canipe passed away in 1997, however the business remains open and is run by his wife and two sons. The company make a wide range of homemade candies with such items as brittles, creams, coated pretzels, panned nuts and fruits, coconut candies, saltwater taffy, chocolate covered jellies, fudge, and divinity (sea foam, nougat).
To this day, Canipe's Candy Citchen remains in Longs, South Carolina with Wee-R-Sweetz retail stores at Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach. Canipe's Chocolates and Candies is located in Coastal Grande Mall and in Market Common.
